On June 16, 2022, the Canadian government tabled Bill C-27, “An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act, the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.”
The main purposes of the Bill are to:
- update PIPEDA
- update Canada’s federal private sector privacy law to create a new tribunal
- propose new rules for artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
It is important to note that this Bill is not entirely new but is a re-working of Bill-C11, The Digital Charter Implementation Act, introduced in November 2020. This act was never implemented as a result of the federal election.
